So, I heard about Impulse a mere few days ago-- I don't remember exactly what pulled me to the news item detailing the whole thing, probably a trip to peek at something Sins-related-- and became rather enamored of the whole concept and giddy for its success. So, thus, here I am.
It probably really starts earlier than that, though, way back when I first really got involved with Stardock's products. I'd read the GameSpy review of GalCiv2 and filed it away to check out when I got a chance(specifically, Brad's work on the AI got a mention and my interest initially, along with the claim that GC2 would supplant Master of Orion pretty handily). Then I pretty much forgot about it as school picked up.
Fast-forward a bit, to my second-to-last term(insane workload, ho!) and DragonCon 2006. The Girl and I weren't keen on wasting the money we'd pre-paid to go, even though i should have been sticking around home to work on my Senior Design Project. But, D*Con had a game-development track going on that year, so we resolved to turn it into a 'working holiday' of sorts, and spent the bulk of our time in those panels. This is where I ended up reminded of GalCiv2, because Stardock was there, in the form of Mormegil and his wife, and Cari the super-coder. It was a fun time, a lot was learned, and I got to know Stardock through its employees rather well over the weekend. I even got to wander off with a CalCiv2 shirt and a copy of the Collector's Edition for showing up to all those panels and generally hanging out and all that. I'd mentioned I do mod work and Mormegil was interested to see what I'd do with it.
Of course... best-laid plans of mice and men and all that. I get back to classes, I get buried under work for the rest of the term, I get buried under graduation(but at least it was with honors!), and in the ensuing time since, I've gotten buried under the requisite job-hunt while running around in circles finding freelance work to pick up the slack in the meantime. So, I never quite got that GalCiv2 modding done i intended to do(though I've got some of the assets I'd planned floating around still), and I feel pretty bad about it-- that's life, though. But that copy of GC2's been well-loved and used through an expansion(and soon to be two), and I've become a large fan of Stardock since.
So what's going on now, and how's this blog fit in? Well, lemme see here. I still do modding projects(I've recently shifted my starship-based mod projects over to Sins of a Solar Empire), because I just love doing the things, and they're a decent way to build a portfolio for a job in game development. I love the idea behind Impulse in general and if anyone can pull it off, Stardock probably will, so I'm here to support it as a community member. As for the blog... in a lot of ways it'll probably occassionally mirror my existing blog(which is professionally-oriented), with a bit more of a personal touch here and there. Some of my artwork'll end up here, there'll definitely be some posts about my modding stuff... and then maybe some random foolishness that I don't feel fits into my main blog's focus.
This is all subject to change, of course.
Edit: First change, a better category(Maybe. I think). This wasn't really fit for the Impulse category, in hindsight. Plus, I've noticed that apparently the blogs are tied into the forums? A little odd, but makes sense enough, more or less! Anyway, let's see if this moves to a better home properly.
